Palmitic Acid Curcumin Ester Facilitates Protection of Neuroblastoma against Oligomeric Aβ40 Insult

Abstract: Background/Aims: The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by amyloid-β (Aβ) is considered to be one of mechanisms underlying the development of Alzheimer's disease. Curcumin can attenuate Aβ-induced neurotoxicity through ROS scavenging, but the protective effect of intracellular curcumin on neurocyte membranes against extracellular Aβ may be compromised. To address this issue, we synthesized a palmitic acid curcumin ester (P-curcumin) which can be cultivated on the cell membrane and investigated … Show more

“…Lipid peroxidation analysis was performed based on spectrophotometry, in which the ferrous ion is oxidized by lipid hydroperoxides to the ferric ion and subsequently reacts with thiocyanate to form a colored complex [ 30 ]. The details were as previously described [ 48 ]. Briefly, the trypsinized cells were collected and treated with the DpdtC for 12 h; the supernatant was removed by centrifugation and washed with PBS.…”

“…CUR has been used as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer agents over a long period of time for the treatments of a number of types of diseases, including varied types of cancers, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases (19-24). A new study reveals that curcumin has the ability to attenuate oxidative stress in the myocardium and can play a protective and therapeutic role in the protection of the myocardium against lipotoxic injury owing to its lipid-lowering properties (25). In another study involving diabetic rats, CUR shows the ability to reduce cardiomyocyte remodeling and relieve cardiac insufficiency (26).…”

“…Curcumin, a lipid-soluble active ingredient of curcuma in traditional Chinese medicine, has diverse pharmacological effects against inflammation, oxidation, bacteria, and tumors [22]. Because of its abundance, low cost, and availability, it has become a promising antitumor drug for further exploitation and application and has been widely applied to antitumor experiments worldwide, which have shown significant achievements in preventing the occurrence, development, and metastasis of tumors [7].…”
