The Beda Formation represents the subsurface sequence of interbedded limestone with subordinate dolomites, which are major hydrocarbon reservoirs in the western Sirte Basin of Libya. Middle Paleocene (Montian) age has been assigned to this formation based on foraminifera, but the list of those age diagnostic foraminifera could not be found in the published literature, thus the age of this formation is questionable. Thick Paleocene-Early to Middle Eocene limestones and calcareous claystones also occur in this basin. Palynological study of 32 core samples of the Beda Formation from four different wells was carried out; but only four samples of Core # 1 (6854'-6884') in the Well # X43 yielded low diversity yet workable assemblages of palynomorphs. The pollen grains and spores indicate a Paleogene age. However, the dinoflagellate cyst assemblages provide several stratigraphically significant forms that indicate an EarlyMiddle Eocene age.The results of the present study suggest that either the studied samples do not belong to the Beda Formation or the age of the Beda Formation ranges from Middle Palaeocene to Early-Middle Eocene. An extensive study of large numbers of core samples from several well sections is suggested to generate new micropaleontological and palynological data that could conclusively define age of the Beda Formation.

Three sequencing methods were used to calculate the most likely biozonation and the periodicity of sedimentary cycles in Lower Cretaceous pelagic strata of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.A database was built of 378 first and last stratigraphic occurrences of calcareous nannofossils, dinocysts, foraminifers, and geomagnetic reversals in highest Jurassic through Lower Cretaceous deep marine strata at 10 Atlantic Ocean and 3 Indian Ocean drilling sites. There are 135 different events in total, about one third of which are unique to either ocean. Using the complete data set, the quantitative stratigraphy methods STRAWOR and RASC calculated closely comparable optimum sequences of average first-and last-occurrence positions. The preferred zonal solution, based on the STRATCOR method, includes 56 events, each of which occurs at three or more sites. The events comprise 6 geomagnetic reversals, 25 nannofossils, 5 planktonic foraminifera, 8 benthic foraminifera, and 12 dinocysts occurrences. Nine assemblage zones have been recognized of Tithonian through Albian age. All but 2 of 18 nannofossil events in the Atlantic Ocean optimum sequence were reported in the same stratigraphic order in a standard Mesozoic nannofossil zonation.Our quantitative examination, using Walsh spectral analysis, of the Lower Cretaceous cyclic sequences at three Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites in the Atlantic Ocean generally supports the hypothesis that they are the product of cyclic climatic changes controlled by the Milankovitch orbital cycles. The peaks in the power spectra usually can be related to obliquity and precession cycles; some peaks seem to correspond to the eccentricity cycle. Obliquity seems to be the most important and persistent orbital element responsible for cyclic sedimentation in the Early Cretaceous Atlantic Ocean.The actual pelagic sedimentation rates were calculated for some cores using the results of spectral analysis. The correlation of the actual pelagic sedimentation rate with cyclic patterns and the occurrence of calcareous turbidites indicate that the changes in cycle pattern are the reflection of changes in the oceanographic setting. The changes in oceanographic setting are related to relative-sea-level fluctuations. A set of 204 Cretaceous and Paleocene samples from Holes 959D, 960A, 960C, 961A, 961B, 962B, 962C (barren), and 962D of the Côte d'Ivoire-Ghana Transform Margin (Leg 159) were palynologically analyzed. Three main types of palynofacies were distinguished. The first type indicates strong terrestrial depositional conditions and characterizes lithologic Unit V of Hole 959D, Subunit VB and most samples of Subunit VA of Hole 960A, and Unit III of Holes 961A and 961B. The presence of some stratigraphically significant spores and pollen grains indicates a late Barremian-middle Albian age for Unit V of Holes 959D and 960A, and a middle Albian age for Unit III of Holes 961A and 961B. The second type of palynofacies reveals mixed terrestrial and marine depositional conditions. This type was observed in Subunit IIC of Hole 962B and Unit III of Hole 962D. The occurrence of stratigraphically significant spore, pollen grain, and dinoflagellate cyst species argues for a Cenomanian age for these units in Holes 962B and 962C. The third type of palynofacies indicates clearly marine environmental conditions. This type is found in Subunit IVA and Unit III of Hole 959D, where highly diversified dinocyst assemblages (73 species, among them the following three new ones: Spiniferites bejuii n. sp., Spiniferites sp. G, and Xenascus ghanaensis n. sp.) were identified. Based on the presence of several Late Cretaceous and Paleocene markers, precise age determinations are possible for this part of Hole 959D: Subunit IVA and the lowermost cores of Unit III are probably early Coniacian in age; subsequent cores of Unit III are Santonian, Campanian, Maastrichtian, Danian and, at the top, late Thanetian in age.
