Pan-European survey on the implementation of minimally invasive pancreatic surgery with emphasis on cancer

Abstract: MI distal pancreatectomy is a common procedure, although its use for cancer is still disputed. MI pancreatoduodenectomy is still an uncommon procedure. Specific training and a randomized trial regarding MI pancreatic cancer surgery are welcomed.

“…Finally, a lack of specific training was cited as the most common reason for not performing a minimally invasive approach [21]. These confirmed the findings of a pan-European survey during which, 45% of surgeons stated they had insufficient training in LDP [22], although 73% of surgeons had experience with minimally invasive distal pancreatectomy [22].…”

“…The lack of generalizable data at national level might contribute to the slow implementation of LDP, as shown by low national utilization rates (15–28 per cent) of the laparoscopic approach. Other factors may include the scarcity of training opportunities, and the need for a clear understanding of the length and steepness of the learning curve outside of specialized high‐volume centres.…”

“…On the contrary, long-term outcomes for tumor resection are scarcer in the literature and further need to be analyzed in studies with longer follow-ups. A recent European survey showed that 31% of the interrogated pancreatic surgeons still considered that laparoscopic DP was inferior to open DP for oncologic resections [27].…”
