PANAME – Project synergy of atmospheric research in the Paris region

Abstract: <p>The Paris region (France) is increasingly the focus of urban atmospheric research. Numerous national and international research projects have chosen Europe’s largest metropolitan region as their study area to better understand and predict critical hazards (incl. heat, air pollution, thunderstorms) in the context of a changing climate. Located on rather flat terrain in continental, mid-latitude climates, the densely populated Paris region is very suitable for the evaluation of urb… Show more

“…This data infrastructure can be expanded as required from multiple, concurrent campaigns and projects. Most campaigns use data streams from partners instrumentation either directly or more typically from their data networks (e.g., Weather Service), or from third-party networks they contribute to (e.g., AERONET, Phenocam Network, ICOS, PANAME) (Giles et al, 2019;Richard et al, 2018;Haeffelin et al, 2023). Many of the latter are two-way contributions with campaign sensors also providing data to these networks.…”

“…Ground-based remote-sensing techniques, such as automatic lidars and ceilometers and Doppler wind lidars, allow vertical profiles to be evaluated, but they remain limited in their horizontal coverage. Dense deployment of such sensors is generally limited to campaigns lasting months to years-for example, in the urbisphere in Berlin (Fenner et al, 2022) or in PANAME in Paris (Kotthaus et al, 2023).…”
