Pancreatic endocrine tumor with neoplastic venous thrombus and bilobar liver metastasis. A case report

Abstract: We report the case of an asymptomatic 56-year-old woman with a metastatic pancreatic endocrine tumor, fortuitously discovered by abdominal imaging. A CT-scan showed a large mass in the pancreatic tail invading the spleen and stomach; in addition, there was neoplastic thrombus within the spleno-mesentericoportal venous confluence and bilobar liver metastases. Surgical resection was performed in two stages. The first procedure was an extended left pancreatectomy with venous thrombectomy and "clearance" of the le… Show more

“…There are only a few case reports analysing the relationship between DVT and liver metastasis. There is one case report of pancreatic endocrine tumour with neoplastic venous thrombus and bilobar liver metastasis (Barbier et al, 2010). The liver is the major organ that synthesizes procoagulants and anticoagulants.…”

“…1,2 Because of the paucity of data reported in the literature, the results of surgical resection of PNETs with MVI as well as the prognostic impact of venous invasion in these patients remain scarcely evaluated. 2,[9][10][11][12][13][14][15] This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, the impact on surgical outcomes and the survival of patients having PNETs with MVI resected at our centre.…”

“…But splanchnic or PVT is exceedingly rare in solid metastatic tumors. [30][31][32] When we compare cholangiocarcinoma and metastatic liver tumor groups with HCC and cirrhosis with PVT groups, we detect interesting findings. Despite the significantly higher levels of the procoagulants (platelets, fibrinogen, CFs V, VII, VIII, IX, and XI) in cholangiocarcinoma and metastatic liver tumor groups, we cannot detect any PVT in these 2 groups.…”
