Pancreatic GIST in a Patient with Limited Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Case Report and Review of Published Cases

Abstract: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and usually occur in the stomach and the small intestine. The pancreas is an extremely rare primary site for GISTs and there are 25 reported cases of pancreatic GIST with most being treated with surgical resection. We describe a 52-year-old African-American female who was diagnosed with limited stage small cell carcinoma in November 2009 and treated with concurrent cisplatin/etoposide chemotherapy and r… Show more

“…About 70 % of GISTs involve the stomach and otherwise the small intestine and esophagus, colon and rectum. Duodenal GISTs represent approximately 4% to 5% of all GISTs 2 3 4 . The histopathological features of GISTs include spindle cell (70%) or epithelioid predominance (20%) and otherwise mixed phenotypes 5 .…”

“…The histopathological features of GISTs include spindle cell (70%) or epithelioid predominance (20%) and otherwise mixed phenotypes 5 . Immunohistochemistry would be helpful for the diagnosis because GISTs show immunoreactivity for CD117 (95%), CD34 (70%) and DOG-1, which is a complementary stain of CD117 1 2 4 . GISTs are usually benign with a malignant transformation rate of 10~30%1.…”

“…5,17-19 In 5 cases the tumor involved the uncinate process of the pancreas located immediately adjacent to the duodenal wall. 20-24 Furthermore, 5 of the tumors reported as pancreatic GISTs also involved stomach, and gastric resection was also performed as part of surgery. 25-29 In most of the remaining cases, the tumors were large well exceeding the dimensions of pancreas.…”

“…The most frequent site of GIST is the stomach (60%), followed by the small intestine (35%) and the colon and rectum (< 5%)[ 1 ]. Immunohistochemistry is helpful for the diagnosis because GISTs show immunoreactivity for CD117 (95%), CD34 (70%), and DOG1, a complementary marker to CD117[ 2 ]. GISTs are usually benign with a malignant transformation rate of 10-30%.…”
