Pancreatic islet blood flow and its measurement

Abstract: Pancreatic islets are richly vascularized, and islet blood vessels are uniquely adapted to maintain and support the internal milieu of the islets favoring normal endocrine function. Islet blood flow is normally very high compared with that to the exocrine pancreas and is autonomously regulated through complex interactions between the nervous system, metabolites from insulin secreting β-cells, endothelium-derived mediators, and hormones. The islet blood flow is normally coupled to the needs for insulin release … Show more

“…An increased islet perfusion in healthy individuals would facilitate insulin dispersal into the systemic circulation, but may not necessarily be linked to an increment in glucosedependent insulin secretion [10]. Accordingly, we did not observe any correlation between the increase in plasma insulin concentrations and perfusion after glucose administration in healthy individuals.…”

“…It has indeed been previously suggested that a prevented vasodilation may be protective for islet function during conditions with impaired glucose tolerance (Jansson et al. ).As expected, GIP had no effects on plasma glucose or serum insulin concentrations in normoglycemic animals (Holst and Gromada ). Neither did the ganglion blocker hexamethonium nor theophylline, an adenosine receptor antagonist in the used concentration (Carlsson et al.…”

“…This has been detailed elsewhere (Carlsson et al 2002a;Jansson et al 2016). A total of 3 9 10 5 black nonradioactive microspheres (EZ-Trac TM ; Triton Microspheres), with a diameter of 10 lm were injected via the catheter with its tip in the ascending aorta during 10 s whole simultaneously collecting an arterial reference sample (Carlsson et al 2002a).…”

“…For example, the endocrine pancreas accounts for just approximately 2% of the total mass of the pancreas but receives ca. 15% of the total blood flow to the pancreas . In this study, whole pancreata were mechanically disrupted into small pieces.…”
