Pancreatic β-cell function as a predictor of cardiovascular outcomes and costs: findings from the Cardiovascular Health Study

Abstract: Beta-cell function as measured by HOMA-%B is a significant predictor of incident cardiovascular events and mortality but not of costs, controlling for HOMA-%S and sociodemographic and clinical confounders.

“…This suggests that pioglitazone-mediated reduction of insulin resistance may slow the progression of CAD [35]. In a study of 4555 elderly subjects, β-cell function as measured by HOMA-B was a significant predictor of incident cardiovascular events and mortality after controlling for HOMA-IR and sociodemographic and clinical confounders [36].…”

“…Previous studies [6,7] have focused on the relationship between b-cell function and cardiovascular events. The Cardiovascular Health Study [6] stated that lower HOMA-b levels were significantly associated with an increased risk of incident coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, but it was not a significant predictor of incident stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Wang et al [7] once measured b-cell function by disposition index, addressing that decreased b-cell function was closely related to the presence of coronary artery disease in those with normal glucose tolerance.…”
