Panoramic radiography and patients with disability: a new simple breathing technique to reduce common airspace error

Abstract: Patients with intellectual disabilities often fail to follow traditional tongue position instructions for panoramic radiographs resulting in missed pathology or unnecessary further radiation. This simple breathing technique is a new clinical instruction method for panoramic radiography developed to reduce the most common patient position error: patient failure to hold the tongue to the roof of the mouth. The technique is suitable for all patients including young patients and those with intellectual disabilitie… Show more

“…40 Another attempt at reducing the PGA is the study by Scott et al, in which the authors proposed a simple respiration control method to decrease airway shadow in paediatric and disabled patients. 43 However, this method is technically sensitive. If breathing control instructions are given too early, the tongue will not remain in the correct position during the imaging period, and if instructions are given too late and the patient swallows during the procedure, incomplete PGA and movement of the hyoid bone will be visible.…”

“…Furthermore, it is noteworthy that breathing through the nose plays a fundamental role in the correct development of the craniofacial complex, as well as protecting the upper airways and purifying the air thanks to the existing structures within the nasal cavity, protecting the organism from harmful particles coming from the environment [8].…”

“…24 Diagnostic quality images can be obtained in special care populations when simple instructions are demonstrated. 25 PRs, when combined with a clinical examination, can be an effective screening tool to identify dentine caries, pulpal and bony pathology, and dental anomalies. 26 PRs are used to diagnose common dental trauma or tooth infection presentations to hospital emergency departments.…”

“…PRs are an accessible, low‐cost, low‐exposure, diagnostic tool that provides a comprehensive view of the dentition, supporting bone tissues, the entire maxillofacial region, and incidental findings of pathology to assist with treatment planning 24 .
