The rise of eco-tourism and rural tourism as new complementary activities which add value to traditional stock-raising functions on historic ranches located in the Pantanal Wetlands of Central-West Brazil is analyzed. Differently from other rural enterprises of the booming Central-West, which produce the majority of Brazilian export commodities, the specific environmental conditions of seasonal wetlands and perennial swamp of the Pantanal restrict the viable options for gaining access to global markets. Consequently, after 1990 ranchers of the Pantanal have developed tourist activities based on the spectacular natural beauty of the wetlands as well as the distinct ranching culture. The ranches have modernized with amenities to attract domestic and foreign tourists and tourism has assumed an importance source of their income.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar os sistemas de produção sustentáveis depecuária bovina de corte no Pantanal. A base de dados da pesquisa é de natureza primária,com coleta diretamente em campo através da aplicação de questionários e entrevistas junto aos atores e entidades da pecuária regional. Os resultados revelam o crescente interesse de pecuaristas por sistemas alternativos de produção pecuária. Sistemas que se adaptam ao ambiente pantaneiro, valorizam e valoram a produção e, sobretudo, diminuem os custos sem alterar a produtividade do rebanho. Garantindo rentabilidade econômica. Associa-se a isso à crescente demanda por carne orgânica e sustentável no mercado nacional e internacional. A pecuária bovina sustentável do Pantanal é uma alternativa de produção ao modelo convencional moderno, visando atender tanto a interesses de pecuaristas pantaneiros, quanto a novas demandas por produtos de qualidade diferenciada e um alimento saudável e adapta-se às condições do bioma Pantanal. As estratégias de negócios articulam a rede de atores com produção e disseminação de informações e conhecimentos do produtor ao consumidor. A produção de pecuária alternativa, mesmo que restrita a poucos produtores serve de exemplo de que a sustentabilidade é possível e viável economicamente, mesmo em médias e grandes propriedades. O Pantanal que historicamente apresentou um caráter mais estático do que dinâmico, se insere na pós-modernidade e no pós-produtivismo, fase atual do capitalismo em base competitiva. Ao sistema produtivo convencional, com diferentes níveis técnicos, somam-se sistemas de produção alternativos, definidos como sustentáveis.
