Papillary Architecture and Functional Characterization of Mucosubstances in the Sheep Tongue

Abstract: This research aimed to reveal the general morphology and topographic distribution of lingual papillae, epithelial characteristics, mucosal structure, and glands with their mucin content in the sheep tongue, with consideration of species-specific characteristics. The tongues of ten sheep were analyzed for this purpose. Filiform and fungiform papillae existed within the borders of the ventral surface of the lingual apex. The majority of the filiform papillae had multiple secondary projections. Fungiform papillae… Show more

“…The most of the functional processes inside the oral cavity are carried out by the tongue, whose presence and description have been showed in different species of fish, demonstrating the variation in the presence of anatomical structures like taste buds, mucous cells and teeth in teleosts, also of commercial interest (Abbate et al., 2006,2017,2020a,2020b; Abbate, Guerrera, Montalbano, Ciriaco, et al., 2012; Abbate, Guerrera, Montalbano, De Carlos, et al., 2012; Alsafy, Bassuoni, & Hanafy, 2018; Amato et al., 2012; Dos Santos, Arantes, Santiago, & Dos Santos, 2015; El Bakary, 2014; Elgendy, Alsafy, & Tanekhy, 2016; Germanà et al., 2009; Guerrera et al., 2015; Ikpegbu, Ibe, & Nlebedum, 2019; Kasumyan, 2019; Kettratad, Senarat, Boonyoung, & Jiraungkoorsku, 2017; Levanti et al., 2017; Mahmoud, Essa, & Sayed, 2016; Sadeghinezhad, Rahmati‐holasoo, Fayyaz, & Zargar, 2015; Sayed, Mahmoud, & Essa, 2019; Yu et al., 2019). “…Histochemical analysis of the lingual glands of lowland tapir showed the similarity especially of von Ebner's glands secretion to the same glands in sheep [49]. On the other hand, there were differences in secretion nature of the mucoserous glands of the root of tongue between lowland tapir and sheep [49]. However, the mucous units of posterior lingual glands were dominant both in sheep [49] as well as in examined lowland tapir.…”

“…The number and shape of the vallate papillae differs between the lowland tapir and the Artiodactyla, where there are from 1 to 5 vallate papillae on both sides of the caudolateral aspect of the tongue [45] in the alpaca, 26 vallate papillae [42] in the goitered gazelle, and 6-8 on both sides of the caudolateral aspect in the bactrian camel [47]. Histochemical analysis of the lingual glands of lowland tapir showed the similarity especially of von Ebner's glands secretion to the same glands in sheep [49].
