Papillary fibroelastoma: A unique case of distant recurrence

Abstract: Echocardiogram of first reported fibroelastoma recurrence distant to previous resection. Central MessageCardiac papillary fibroelastoma recurrence is exceedingly rare but has been reported at previous resection locations. We present the first reported recurrence of distant from past surgical sites.

“…Because they are viewed more as clinical curiosities than as bona fide cardiac pathologies, with the primary treatment consisting of surgical excision, the literature concerning papillary fibroelastomas has largely consisted of clinical series and case reports of unusual locations and manifestations, 1,2 such as the report in this issue of the Journal by Popovic and colleagues. 3 What distinguishes this case report from others, however, is its description of recurrence of a valve-based (aortic valve) papillary fibroelastoma to a ''distant'' nonvalvular site (left ventricle). This finding is inconsistent with the notions that these lesions are benign and may not even be true neoplasms but rather hamartomas or reactive changes of normal tissue.…”

“…Recurrence is rare, and has been only described in a few cases, highlighting the relevance of monitoring with TTE for identification. 2,9 Advances in non-invasive diagnostic imaging techniques have played a key role in evaluating and identifying an increasing number of intracardiac tumors more quickly and more effectively, even in the case of those that are poorly defined and small in size. Among these techniques, TTE stands out as a non-invasive method with greater access and high accuracy in detecting cardiac tumors, presenting a specificity of 87.8% and a sensitivity of 88.9%.…”

“…A recorrência é rara, sendo descrita em apenas alguns casos, destacando-se a relevância do acompanhamento com o ETT para identificação. 2,9 Os avanços nas técnicas de diagnóstico por imagem não invasivas têm desempenhado um papel fundamental na avaliação e identificação de um número crescente de tumores intracardíacos de forma mais rápida e efetiva, mesmo aqueles que são mal definidos e de tamanho reduzido. Entre essas…”
