Recently, filter bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) has received increasing attention from researchers, owing to its merits and superior spectral efficiency. High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) occurs in approximately all multicarrier systems, including FBMC/OQAM, and may cause bit-error-rate (BER) degradation if not appropriately handled. Conventional PAPR reduction methods for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), such as partial transmit sequence (PTS), selective mapping (SLM), and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) spreading, are ineffective in FBMC/OQAM because of the different structure of the symbols. This study proposes a novel method combining DFT spreading and PTS methods to reduce the PAPR of FBMC/OQAM systems with reasonable computational complexity. Numerical results obtained from various computer simulations show that the proposed method achieves a noticeable enhancement in the PAPR performance of the FBMC/OQAM signal compared to other existing methods without affecting the BER performance. Further, the computational complexity analysis and BER performance of the proposed method are presented in comparison to typical existing methods. From our computer simulations, the proposed method reduces the PAPR by approximately 32.8% compared to that of the conventional methods, and the BER performance is improved by 25% with a high-power amplifier effect.

In this paper, the overlapping Partial Transmit Sequence (overlapping-PTS) with Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) phase optimization method is proposed to reduce the larger Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) which is the major drawback of filter bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC-OQAM) system. In this proposed method, we clarify the problem of larger PAPR by reducing the PAPR of each overlapping data symbol with lower combination of the optimal phase factors. Unlike the conventional PTS methods, the proposed method uses the lower combination of phase factors by applying the ABC algorithm with considering the overlap between the current data symbol and the past data symbol to search the optimal phase combination. The proposed overlapping-PTS with ABC phase optimization method can significantly reduce the larger PAPR with low computational complexity for the FBMC-OQAM system which can be verified by the computer simulation results. From the computer simulation results, it can be confirmed that the proposed method shows much better PAPR which can reduce the PAPR by approximately 1.9 dB at CCDF 10 -1 as comparing with the conventional PTS method and can perform much lower computational complexity than the conventional methods which are only 4.38% and 0.76% for S phase factor pattern =300 and 50 respectively.

The filter bank multicarrier employing offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) is a candidate transmission scheme for 5G wireless communication systems. However, it has a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Due to the nature of overlapped signal structure of FBMC/OQAM, conventional PAPR reduction schemes cannot work effectively. A hybrid PAPR reduction scheme based on selective mapping (SLM) and multi data block partial transmit sequence (M-PTS) methods is proposed for FBMC/OQAM signals in this paper. Different from the simple SLM-PTS method, the proposed hybrid algorithm takes into account the overlapping effect of multiple adjacent data blocks on its PTS process. From simulation results, it can be obtained that the proposed method can offer a significant PAPR reduction performance improvement compared with the SLM, PTS and SLM-PTS methods. The proposed method can effectively reduce the PAPR in FBMC/OQAM systems.
