The Metaverse has been the centre of attraction for educationists for quite some time. This field got renewed interest with the announcement of social media giant Facebook as it rebranding and positioning it as Meta. While several studies conducted literature reviews to summarize the findings related to the Metaverse in general, no study to the best of our knowledge focused on systematically summarizing the finding related to the Metaverse in education. To cover this gap, this study conducts a systematic literature review of the Metaverse in education. It then applies both content and bibliometric analysis to reveal the research trends, focus, and limitations of this research topic. The obtained findings reveal the research gap in lifelogging applications in educational Metaverse. The findings also show that the design of Metaverse in education has evolved over generations, where generation Z is more targeted with artificial intelligence technologies compared to generation X or Y. In terms of learning scenarios, there have been very few studies focusing on mobile learning, hybrid learning, and micro learning. Additionally, no study focused on using the Metaverse in education for students with disabilities. The findings of this study provide a roadmap of future research directions to be taken into consideration and investigated to enhance the adoption of the Metaverse in education worldwide, as well as to enhance the learning and teaching experiences in the Metaverse.

The next step of digital development is the metaverse, which has the potential to drastically alter how people use technology and expand the range of services available beyond conventional systems that can be accessed online. As the efficiency, performance, and quality of service access reach their peak levels, the focus has shifted to the user experience. Due to this, there is an increasing demand for more involved and thorough customer service, and service providers are willing to increase their present standards. Consumers are genuinely asking for tactile and immersive elements in their digital interfaces, but these features can only be made possible by the metaverse's potentially futuristic subfields of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and extended reality (XR). However, the metaverse may not be widely used due to significant security and privacy issues either from underlying technology or produced by the new digital environment. A variety of fundamental problems, such as scalability and interoperability, can arise in terms of ensuring security for the metaverse because of the metaverse's inherent properties, such as immersive realism, sustainability, and heterogeneity. In this survey, we propose a hypothetical meta‐stack framework to understand the various components in the realm of metaverse and then provide wide‐ranging insights on the most recent development in metaverse realm in the context of cutting‐edge technologies, security vulnerabilities and preventive measures specific to the metaverse and the research challenges pertaining to metaverse.

A COVID-19 motivou profundas transformações no campo educacional, acelerando mudanças relacionadas ao uso de novas tecnologias para alunos e professores, sendo forçados a frequentaram ambientes remotos constantemente e adaptarem as práticas educacionais a eles. Com o retorno gradativo às atividades presenciais após o período crítico da pandemia, alunos e professores enfrentaram o crescimento de uma desafiadora realidade, o ensino e aprendizado híbrido. Neste contexto, o uso de tecnologias como o metaverso surge como abordagem natural a este tipo de ensino, uma vez que apresenta a proposta de estender o mundo real para ambientes virtuais. Neste artigo, o objetivo é apresentar o uso de um metaverso como um ambiente de aprendizado para dar suporte ao ensino híbrido. Através de um estudo quasi-experimental em uma turma de ensino superior, foi analisada a percepção dos alunos e sua motivação ao usar este tipo de abordagem para o ensino híbrido. Como resultados, foram identificadas evidências positivas de que o metaverso foi percebido com um bom ambiente de aprendizado para o ensino híbrido e que proporcionou motivação aos alunos para a realização das atividades didáticas propostas. Assim, a partir das lições aprendidas na pandemia, este trabalho traz contribuições ao apresentar uma possível abordagem usando o metaverso como ambiente de aprendizado para suportar as necessidades do ensino híbrido.
