Paraconodont Westergaardodina in the Lower Ordovician of the Prague Basin, Czech Republic

Abstract: Abstract. -The morphology of elements of the paraconodont genus Westergaardodina found in the Early Ordovician deposits of Bohemia resembles that of the Late Cambrian species W. bicuspidata and W. polymorpha. The presence of Westergaardodina is consistent with the suggested Upper Tremadocian age of its horizon, as reworking of the Upper Cambrian sediment seems unlikely for geological and taphonomic reasons. This is the first report of this genus from the Ordovician in the European part of peri-Gondwana.•

“…The major studies about the Cambrian and Ordovician trilobite autecology was published by Šnajdr (1978), Havlíček & Vaněk (1990), Fusco G. et al (2004), Budil et al (2007), Mergl et al (2007) concentrated on the autecology of Silurian trilobites but also studied a Devonian trilobite assemblage and their autecology from the Chýnice Limestones. Chlupáč (1983) and Chlupáč et al (1985) concentrated on a trilobite assemblage from the Lochkovian-Pragian interval in the Prague Basin.…”

“…Characteristic lingulate brachiopods Dactylotreta prisca Mergl, 2002 and Celdobolus mirandus (Barrande, 1879) are also present on the slab with the sponge and thus unambiguously confirm the local stratigraphic position of the specimen. A total lack of organicwalled index fossils makes international correlation of the Olešná Member less clear, but the geological position and dominance of drepanostoidform conodonts indicate the P. deltifer to P. proteus zones; the presence of Westergaardodina has limited stratigraphic value (Mergl 2006).…”
