Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder first presented by bladder bloody tamponade: Two case reports and review of the literatures

Abstract: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas) are catecholamine-secreting tumors. The paraganglioma of the urinary bladder is an uncommon neoplasm with a higher malignancy rate. Only about 60% of bladder paragangliomas presented with hematuria, and most of them were microscopic hematuria. Herein, we report two cases of bladder paraganglioma with bladder bloody tamponade. In Case 1, radical cystectomy and regional lymphadenectomy were performed for a huge bladder tumor and left pelvic l… Show more

“…We extensively reviewed the English literature on this subject and report the largest analysis of pheochromocytomas involving the urinary bladder. Our study improves upon previous large reviews [5,84]. For example, Tsai et al includes one study dating back to 1911, and then eleven studies between 1989 and 2000 [5].…”

“…It was estimated that ~3% of patients treated by the above therapies succumbed to their cancer. However, it is important to note that ≥20% of patients had recurrence or metastases at the last known follow-up (20,21). The present case report may be helpful to standardize the reporting guidelines of paraganglioma cases in order to better understand its natural progression and outcomes.…”

“…They can, however, arise in 10%–20% of the cases from sympathetic tissue outside the adrenals and are then called paragangliomas 1 2. Paragangliomas of the urinary bladder are very rare, representing 0.06% of bladder tumours 3. These are typically functional and commonly present with symptoms of paroxysmal hypertension, palpitations and micturition syncope while a proportion of cases present with non-specific symptoms of a bladder tumour such as painless haematuria, abdominal fullness and pain 4 5…”
