Parallel 2D FFT implementation on FPGA suitable for real-time MR image processing

Abstract: We report the design and implementation of a parallel two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D FFT) algorithm on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for real-time MR image processing. Although a number of architectures of 2D FFT hardware processors have been reported, these generic processors or IP cores are not always effective for processing MRI data. The key feature of our design is that our processors are customized solely for real-time MRI applications. We demonstrate that by considering the unique f… Show more

“…As shown in the figure, the vectorized DFT and IDFT kernels consume (3.6 ms, 3.8 ms) and (2.43 ms, 2.59 ms) on 192 cores Intel and 768 cores NVIDIA GPUs, which are comparatively lesser than the 2D FFT implementation using CUFFT library on 5120 cores NVIDIA GPU or on a FPGA XC7K410T at a clock frequency 40 MHz. [62,63]. Figure 12 exhibits the average creation times of filters' matrices are too high for Gaussian and LoG filters, i.e., the expected filtration times are low compared to Ideal and Butterworth filters.…”

“…Main tasks are data sorting, optical link handling, multiplexing and forwarding of data from different interfacing links, embedding control and trigger information, etc. [14]. These versatile functionalities require RU to be designed on custom electronics boards with re-programmable functionality [15].…”

“…The image reconstruction module was largely based on one of the recently developed 2D FFT modules 24 with small modifications. In the present work, we considered only a single image with pixel resolution of 128 × 128.…”
