Parallel manifestation of Crohn’s disease and acute pericarditis: a report of two cases

Abstract: Pericarditis is an uncommon extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which may occur at any time during its natural course. Moreover, it may be associated with the medications used to treat IBD, especially mesalamine. We report on two patients with acute pericarditis who were subsequently diagnosed with Crohn's disease. It is likely that mild, longstanding, virtually asymptomatic intestinal disease preceded the onset of pericarditis in both cases.

“…The incidence of extraintestinal manifestations ranges between 6%-47% 20-23. Although concomitance of IBDs with cardiac disorders is rare, sporadic cases of complication with pericardial effusion, pericarditis, myocarditis, endocarditis, cardiomyopathy, thromboembolic events, conduction defects and drug use have been reported 3,24. On the other hand, early atherosclerosis and thromboembolic events, and as a consequence cardiovascular mortality are known to increase in cases with IBD 25-28.…”

“…Cardiac involvement is rare, but it can worsen the prognosis of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) [2]. Perimyocarditis, valvular damage and venous thrombosis are the most common cardiovascular manifestations in IBD patients [3][4][5][6][7][8][9].…”
