Parallel sluice gates: pier impact on flow field condition

Abstract

Parallel sluice gates are used instead of a single large one in wide channels separated usually by piers in between. However, the influence of such separating piers on the downstream flow hydraulics has not been investigated thoroughly yet. The present study aimed at experimentally evaluating the effect of installing such piers on the flow condition downstream parallel gates. Different pier lengths were installed between the gates in a wide channel and the resulting flow field and velocity distributions were recorded using acoustic Doppler velocimetry, ADV. Flow pattern observations revealed different regions of forward flow, stagnation zones, and reverse flow zones. The results indicated that the presence of a pier would shift the turbulence caused by dissimilar gate openings, to the downstream pool of the parallel sluice gates. Based on the analysis of the compiled data it is recommended to consider the minimum separating pier length to achieve a more uniform flow condition in a shorter distance at the downstream pool.
