Paramagnetic Products of the Oxidation of Cyanocobaltate(II)

Abstract: By means of a low-temperature ESR technique, several paramagnetic complexes have been detected during the reaction of aqueous [CoII(CN)5]3- with O2. Of these only [(CN)5CoIII-O-O-CoIV(CN)5]5-, the final oxidation product, is stable in solution. It has a 15-line spectrum resembling that of [(NH3)5CoIII-O-O-CoIV(NH3)5]5+ but more sharply defined and independent of pH. Under very alkaline conditions the first oxidation product detectable by ESR has an 8-line signal, indicating a mononuclear complex, possibly [(… Show more

“…This spectrum is typical of many Co(II)-oxygen adducts studied in recent years (see, e.g. Bayston et al, 1969;Cockle et al, 1970;Hoffman et al, 1970) (Bayston et al, 1963). The same signal was of course generated in enzymecyanide solutions prepared aerobically, but it should be emphasized that the process giving rise to it was quite irreversible.…”

“…These and other considerations (Hoffman et al, 1970) indicate that the unpaired spin now resides mainly on the 02 ligand, with cobalt formally oxidized to Co(III). The fact that irreversible oxidation does not occur, as for example with [Co(CN)5]3-, is due in part to the impossibility of obtaining a peroxo-bridged dicobalt species, which is usually the next intermediate (Bayston et al, 1963).…”

“…The techniques used for obtaining electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of cobaltous complexes in an atmosphere of argon, including gas purification, have been dealt with in published papers (Bayston and Winfield, 1967;Bayston et al, 1963Bayston et al, , 1969. Coupling constants and g values were also determined as before (Bayston et al, 1969).…”

“…Elsewhere we have listed eight conceivable ways in which activation by the metal may commence1 2345and have, together with other groups of investigators (see, for example, references 2-4), provided some experimental evidence for the reality of four of them. 1,[5][6][7][8] Pauling9 and many later investigators have studied the reversible complexing of 02 to give a diamagnetic mono-nuclear product such as oxymyoglobin. Neither partner behaves as a free radical.…”
