Parameter Estimation for a Polymerization Reactor Model with a Composite-Step Trust-Region NLP Algorithm

Abstract: We consider an application of the trust-region SQP algorithm described by Arora and Biegler (Comput. Optim. Appl., in press) to the parameter estimation for a polymerization reactor. In particular, we are interested in the robustness of this algorithm in solving ill-conditioned optimization problems with differential algebraic (DAE) models. For this system, it is possible to measure a variety of states, such as production and concentrations. Some of these states contain more information and lead to more reli… Show more

“…Ellipsoidal regions have been proven to be exact in case of linear process models. The principal axes of the ellipsoid indicate the smallest and largest variations in linear combinations of the parameters that lead to equivalent data fitting [31]. Clearly, the smaller the ellipsoid, the better is the parameter estimation.…”

“…24 Alternatively, we have tested a simultaneous full-space solution with trust region, SQP or rSQP method. [25][26][27] In addition, we propose the advantage of using inexact methods to speed TKIP convergence. The inexact evaluation of the system and its sensitivity information will be obtained by a matrix-free Newton-Krylov method 22 and is discussed next.…”
