Parametric Studies for Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Simulations

Abstract: -Efficiency of the vertical axis wind turbine depends on turbine design. Wind tunnel experiments, usually performed for evaluation of turbine design, are expensive in comparison with CFD simulations. Although purely numeric, CFD models critically depend on a large set of parameters, which varies from mesh size to numerical schemes and models of turbulence. The aim of the presented research is to evaluate the critical ranges of these parameters for a practically applicable turbine design. Keywords -convergence o… Show more

“…The Savonius vertical axis wind turbine consisting of two halves-cylinders slightly offset, It is a simple configuration, with suitable starting features and performs at low ranges of wind speed, it has a capacity to catch wind from all directions [5]. The wind turbine placed in the airflow deflects the streamlines arriving on the blade in advance towards the blade in return.…”

“…Defined as central differencing scheme, where the value is calculated with a linear interpolation. This scheme has the second order accuracy, but it is unbounded, which means non-physical oscillations can appear (Gulbe, Jekabsons, & Traskovs, 2011).…”
