Parametric Study of Glass Fiber Drawing Process

Abstract: Drawing of glass fibers is an important industrial process used for the manufacture of a variety of materials ranging from optical communications cables to fiber filter media. A variety of machines exist for performing the drawing function, but all share similar problems with control of the fiber diameter and breakage of the fibers during the extrusion process. In many cases, control systems are not configured to monitor the most critical process variables, but instead use only furnace crown temperature. Upset… Show more

“…More recently, Liu [9] investigated numerically the variations of the final fiber diameter due to variabilities in the process and identified the temperature of the ambient air and of the furnace as their main cause. These findings led to the development of a control system to reduce the variations of the fiber diameter by adjusting the winder velocity.…”

“…In recent times, the focus of research has been on developing glass fibers for material reinforcement in composite materials and the wide variety of usage areas [7,8]. Although glass fibers have lower mechanical properties than that of carbon fibers, they are widely used since their raw materials are inexpensive and they have a facile production process [9][10][11].…”

“…Liu and Banta [25] have developed an analytical model on the parameters that are effective during fiber drawing. Furthermore, Lima and Monteiro [26] and Gupta et al [27] investigated the thermal behaviors of borosilicate glass/fiber depending on the temperature.…”

“…Based on a parametric analysis of the glass fiber drawing process presented in previous work, a LQR control model with reduced order estimator and reference input is developed in this paper for a small glass furnace. Multivariable control analysis is performed to obtain the desired molten glass temperature at the bottom of the furnace and the correct winder speed when common disturbances occur such as changes in ambient temperature or glass depth in the furnace.…”
