Parametric Study of Polymer-Nanoparticles-Assisted Injectivity Performance for Axisymmetric Two-Phase Flow in EOR Processes

Abstract: Among a wide range of enhanced oil-recovery techniques, polymer flooding has been selected by petroleum industries due to the simplicity and lower cost of operational performances. The reason for this selection is due to the mobility-reduction of the water phase, facilitating the forward-movement of oil. The objective of this comprehensive study is to develop a mathematical model for simultaneous injection of polymer-assisted nanoparticles migration to calculate an oil-recovery factor. Then, a sensitivity anal… Show more

“…The capillary penetration of wetting fluids into narrow spaces such as cylindrical (or square) tube and porous media is important in many industrial and natural processes. For example, wettability changes in the oil production process like the chemical enhanced oil recovery have a significant effect on capillary pressure, irreducible water saturation, and residual oil saturation [1][2][3][4]. In addition, capillary-driven flow is a fundamental phenomenon in important applications such as the development of high-performance heat transfer and thermal management systems.…”

“…In chemical EOR methods, chemicals such as alkalis, polymers, and surfactants are injected into reservoirs to create favorable crude oil/brine/rock interactions to increase displacement and sweep efficiencies. Polymers such as hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) and xanthan gum are commonly used to increase the viscosity of injection water and thus improve oil/water mobility ratio for effective displacement of oil by water [ 3 ]. Surfactants are primarily used to lower the interfacial tension (IFT) between oil and water and thus decrease capillary forces to mobilize trapped oil at pore throats [ 4 ].…”
