Paranasal sinus cysts in the horse: Complications related to their presence and surgical treatment in 37 cases

Abstract: Overall, the diagnosis and treatment of sinus cysts is relatively straightforward and carries a good prognosis. In long-standing cases complications secondary to the expansive growth of cysts will dramatically affect the prognosis for full recovery due to pressure-induced changes to facial bones, cheek teeth and nerves. These secondary complications mainly occurring in older horses may be due to a combination of a relatively longer period of affection and the inflexibility of older horses' bones. Cyst recurren… Show more

“…We did not experience any healing complication, compared to other cases (Easley & Freeman 2013b), perhaps because we completely sutured the periosteum and because our horse received systemic antibiotics (Dixon et al 2012b). The duration of post-operative treatments and hospitalisation were similar to those reported by Fenner et al (2019).…”

“…Therefore, further information that would potentially elucidate the etiology of SP was not found in our study. Trauma or previous surgical sinusotomy is described as a possible direct cause (Dixon 1991, Tremaine and Freeman 2006, Fenner et al 2018, but this did not occur in any of the cases in the present study. Instability of the nasofrontal suture line was seen in all cases that underwent surgical treatment and has been discussed as a predisposing factor for the development of SP (Manso-Diaz and Taeymans 2012).…”

“…The nasofrontal suture line at the level of the rostral aspect of the orbits is most often affected Lane 1987, Tremaine andDixon 2002), whereas the nasolacrimal (Dixon 1991, Tremaine andDixon 2001) and maxillolacrimal sutures (Carslake 2009) are less commonly involved. Possible causes of SP include trauma (Dixon 1991), previous surgical sinusotomy (Dixon 1991, Tremaine and Freeman 2006, Fenner et al 2018) and instability attributable to chronic fracture (Klein et al 2014). However, the exact etiology of this condition is unknown.…”

“…Raumfordernde Prozesse (z. B. Sinuszysten, Neoplasien) können zu Verdrängungen und Auflösungserscheinungen der Nasen-und Siebbeinmuscheln und angrenzenden Schädelknochen, zu einer Verlagerung und Osteolyse des Canalis infraorbitalis, einer Abflachung der Alveolardächer und Zahnwurzeln sowie zu einer Verlagerung der Nasenscheidewand führen [16]. Neben den Nasennebenhöhlen sollte bei Zahnerkrankungen auch auf die rostra-…”
