“… 9 12 Additionally, multiple reports have shown granuloma formation and neurological effects associated with the use of some hemostatic agents if not removed. 13 19 These observations support the need to develop products that effectively achieve hemostasis in a diverse patient population and introduce minimal safety concerns. An ideal hemostatic agent has the potential to decrease the use of blood products in elective and emergency surgery and demonstrates the ability to manage bleeding from both parenchymal and small or inaccessible arterial and venous structures.…”

“…231 Despite having been used for decades, it is known to cause immune responses and can also cause postoperative neurological complications such as impairment in motor or sensory function of the lower extremities (paraplegia). [232][233][234]…”

“…Of particular concern are case reports linking Surgicel ® with postoperative neurological complications. Paraplegia following thoracotomy is the most commonly reported neurological finding21, 51–54. Henry and co‐workers54 cite 14 reports of this problem in addition to their own case report, but also note that this represents an incidence of only 0·08 per cent.…”

“…Henry and co‐workers54 cite 14 reports of this problem in addition to their own case report, but also note that this represents an incidence of only 0·08 per cent. The suggested mechanism is migration of oxidized cellulose from the thoracotomy site through an intervertebral foramen, which is very closely related to the pleural cavity posteriorly52. The neurological complications that follow are thought to be the result of compression of the cord when saturation with blood causes the Surgicel ® to swell51, or direct neurotoxicity resulting from the low pH of Surgicel ® 55.…”
