Paraquat for Weed Control Prior to Establishing Legumes

After land was plowed in the spring and prepared for planting, yellow nutsedge(Cyperus esculentusL.) was allowed to develop to heights of 10 to 12 and 20 to 25 cm. Either glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] or paraquat (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium ion) was applied to emerged yellow nutsedge and other annual weeds at rates of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kg/ha. Half of the plots were double-disked 3 days after herbicide applications, and then all plots were planted with alfalfa(Medicago sativaL. ‘Cayuga’). Disking alone and application of glyphosate or paraquat alone did not satisfactorily control all weeds. However, the combination of a herbicide and disking controlled weeds enough to allow excellent establishment of alfalfa. In the year after establishment, the first cutting yields from the better combination treatments ranged from 3000 to 4400 kg/ha, which is normal for mid- to late-summer plantings in the region. Glyphosate was better than paraquat for control of grass weeds. Paraquat approached glyphosate in effectiveness when a supplemental disking treatment was added. Disking was as effective as the herbicide treatments for control of yellow nutsedge but not for control of broadleaf or annual grass weeds.

Effects of Paraquat and Dinoseb in Hops

Paraquat (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium ion) at 1.1 and 2.2 kg/ha and paraquat + dinoseb (2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol) at 1.1 + 0.7 kg/ha controlled redroot pigweed(Amaranthus retroflexusL.) and barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli(L.) Beauv.] in hops (Humulus lupulusL. ‘Yakima Cluster’) without reducing hop yield or the alpha and beta acid content of the hop cones. Three applications at about 3-week intervals were required to control weeds until harvest. Two applications controlled hop sucker growth. Paraquat at more than 0.6 kg/ha in the third application caused excessive reduction in hop sucker growth.

Common Chickweed Control in Established Alfalfa

Herbicide treatments were applied to established alfalfa (Medicago sativaL.) in 1969 and 1970 to determine winter annual weed control efficacy, crop tolerance, and influence on alfalfa yield and protein. Common chickweed (Stellaria media(L.) Cyrillo) was the predominant species in both years. Excellent weed control was achieved in 1969 with 2-sec-butylamino-4-ethylamino-6-methoxy-s-triazine (GS 14254) at 1.7 kg/ha, 2-[[4-chloro-6-(ethylamino)-s-triazin-2-yl]amino]-2-methyl-propionitrile (cyanazine) at 4.5 kg/ha, 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) at 1.7 kg/ha, and 3-tert-butyl-5-chloro-6-methyluracil (terbacil) at 1.1 kg/ha. Several other treatments also significantly reduced weed yields. All herbicides significantly reduced weed yields in 1970. First harvest alfalfa yields in 1969 were not increased significantly despite the excellent weed control afforded by several treatments. Second harvest alfalfa yields did not differ significantly, however, weeds were not a problem in the regrowth. In 1970 four of the 19 treatments did yield significantly more than control plots. Alfalfa protein was not altered by any of the treatments either year.
