“…ment of the renal vein is in agreement with the impor tance of macroscopic vein invasion in the clinical studies [25]. The prognostic importance of renal vein invasion has been shown to decline when other factors are in cluded [26], An extrarenai arterial supply to a renal carcinoma (the so-called parasitic circulation) has been shown to occur in completely intrarenal tumors [27], This was conformed in this study too, and the 'parasitic circulation' could not be used as a reliable criterion for staging. An additional arterial supply from sources other than the lumbar arter ies did correlate with a reduced survival.…”

“…How ever, reports concerning the preoperative angiographic detection of isolated, relatively small metastatic nodules are rare. Although angiography is of little help in deter mining the local extension of renal cell carcinoma regard ing tumor growth into the perinephric fat, invasion to adjacent organs, and metastases in regional lymph nodes [6], the diagnostic value of preoperative routine angiogra phy for the detection of metastatic lesions, which can be surgically treated, should be emphasized.…”

“…In addition, segments of the kidney may be supplied by separate, inconstant smaller arteries directly from the aorta (2). Peripheral branches of the intrarenal arteries anastomose with the perirenal arterial plexus of Turner through the renal capsule (5,17). Tributaries to this plexus are branches directly from the aorta and from the renal capsular, pelvic, ureteric, suprarenal, gonadal, lumbar and intercostal arteries (1).…”

“…In the present investigation, 14 tumours had collateral arterial supply demonstrated at angiography but 10 were completely intracapsular at operation and probably even at the time of angiography. BUIST (5) reported collaterals from the inferior mesenteric artery in a case of renal cell carcinoma where the tumour was entirely confined inside the renal capsule. In one case in the present series collaterals from the inferior mesenteric artery corresponded to tumour engagement of the left mesocolon.…”
