Parasitic community of Fransciscodoras marmoratus (Reinhardt, 1874) (Pisces: Siluriformes, Doradidae) from the upper São Francisco river, Brazil

Abstract: One hundred and thirteen specimens of Franciscodoras marmoratus (Reinhardt, 1874) were collected in the upper São Francisco River (18° 12' 32" S, 45° 15' 41" W, state of Minas Gerais) between September, 1999 and January, 2004 to investigate their parasite fauna. From this total, 45 (39.8%) were afflicted by at least one parasite species. The parasitic richness consisted of six species represented by Hirudinea (n = 20), Monogenoidea (n = 25), Eucestoda (n = 55), Nematoda (n = 1, n = 2) and Acanthocephala (n … Show more

“…Lacerda et al (2013b) accepted this hypothesis when they verified that both species of proteocephalids present in C. piquiti Kullander & Ferreira, 2006, from the original environment (Lajeado Reservoir and São Salvador, Tocantins River) continued to parasitize those hosts that were introduced in new places (Jupiá and Itaipu Reservoirs, Paraná River). All of the parasite species that were analyzed showed a typical pattern of aggregated or superdispersed distribution, which are common patterns in studies on parasites of freshwater fish (MACHADO et al, 2000;GUIDELLI et al, 2003;SANTOS;BRASIL-SATO, 2006). …”

“…Subsequently, these fish acquire new parasite species in their new habitat MORAND, 2004). Since C. kelberi is an exotic species, it is possible that the proteocephalid cestodes that were found had been introduced in conjunction with their hosts, because no other species of fish from the Três Marias Reservoir in the upper São Francisco River region, whose parasitic fauna was investigated, presented with such helminths SANTOS, 2003SANTOS, , 2005SANTOS;BRASIL-SATO, 2006;SANTOS, 2008;MONTEIRO et al, 2009). “…Dias et al (2004) and Santos and Brasil-Sato (2006) did not observe any negative effect of the infection by Rondonia rondoni Travassos, 1920 (Nematoda) on the condition factor of P. granulosus and Franciscodoras marmoratus Reinhardt, 1874. On the other hand, the monogenoidean Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 showed a negative correlation to the prevalence and parasitism in cultured tilapia Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758 (Lizama et al, 2007).…”

“…The biometric data of siluriform hosts have been analyzed and were related to the parasitic indexes in several works (MACHADO et al, 1994;PAVANELLI, 2004;SANTOS, 2005;MOREIRA et al, 2005;BRASIL-SATO, 2006;BACHMANN et al, 2007). In the São Francisco River, parasitic indexes have been minimally influenced by fish size, and the possible cumulative effect of parasites, as proposed by Rohde (1993), has not been observed in parasite communities of fish in that hydric system.…”
