Parasitic helminths of the digestive system of wild boars bred in captivity

Abstract: This study aimed to identify the parasites that inhabit the digestive system of Sus scrofa scrofa from a commercial breeding facility in southern Brazil, and reports the first occurrence of Trichostrongylus colubriformis in wild boars. The gastrointestinal tracts of 40 wild boars from a commercial breeding facility were collected and individualized during slaughter in a cold-storage slaughterhouse. Out of this total, 87.5% were parasitized by the helminths Ascaris suum, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Oesophag… Show more

“…This is the first study on the helminthological diversity of non-captive wild boars in Brazil, and the first report of the occurrence of M. hirudinaceus , G. urosubulatus , and S. dentatus in this species in the country; the other helminths have been reported in captive wild boars in Brazil [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. A greater species variety was observed in wild specimens in comparison with captive wild boars from the same region [ 14 ].…”

“…Some studies have evaluated the helminth fauna of captive wild boars [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ], but there are no studies on wild populations from Brazil. Knowing that there is a growing need to understand the implications of this invasive species and their parasites on the balance of ecosystems as well as on human and animal health, our study documents the occurrence of helminths in wild boars from São Paulo State, one of the most affected regions of Brazil [ 18 ].…”

“…Piauí is one of the states where its presence has not yet been registered. Oesophagostomum dentatum and O. quadrispinulatum infect domestic pigs in Brazil, Europe and Asia, with O. dentatum being identified in wild boar in Brazil as well (Silva & Müller, 2013;Li et al, 2017). It can be deduced that the process of introduction of pig farming in Brazil and its expansion also enabled the expansion of these helminth species.…”

“…Javalis (Sus scrofa scrofa) são predispostos à ocorrência de helmintíases, independentemente se são animais de vida livre ou criados em cativeiro. Estudos realizados no Brasil demonstraram uma prevalência de infecção por helmintos de 66,5% nesta espécie (MUNDIN et al, 2004;GOMES et al, 2005;SILVA et al, 2013;MARQUES et al, 2016).…”
