This study examines how family organization is associated with the quality of family life for parents in first marriages, remarriages with biological children, and several types of stepfamilies. Data are drawn from the 1987-1988 National Survey of Families and Households; only married couples in which both spouses participated in the survey and who had children under age 19 in the household are considered (N ---3,120). Results indicate that respondents in different family structures differ in the perceived quality of parent-child relationships, that differences in family structure are not related to differences in family organization, and that some aspects of family organization are related to marital quality and the quality of parent-child relationships. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicate that family structure and family organization are independently related to the quality of family life.

This study sought to understand the effect that residential biological parent-child relationship has on retrospective accounts of overall stepfamily experiences. Using data from the Stepfamily Experiences Project (STEP), a nationally-based quota sample, retrospective accounts of 1,593 emerging adults' stepfamily experiences were analyzed. Results indicated that a higher quality residential biological parent-child relationship was positively and significantly correlated with a higher quality stepfamily experience. Clinicians and other social scientists need to be aware of the importance of strengthening the parent-child relationship when providing services and interventions for stepfamilies.

La croissance importante du nombre de familles recomposées a amené les chercheurs à examiner de plus près cette nouvelle réalité familiale. Cet article tente de cerner l'état des connaissances actuelles dans ce domaine en présentant les résultats de plusieurs études empiriques. Les thèmes ayant le plus retenu l'attention des chercheurs sont abordés dans cette recension des écrits, dont les caractéristiques structurelles de ces familles, la satisfaction et l'ajustement des adultes, le rôle de beau-parent et les effets de la recomposition familiale sur les comportements, les attitudes et les sentiments des enfants. L'auteure tente finalement de faire ressortir de l'ensemble de ces résultats certains constats qu'il serait intéressant d'approfondir dans les recherches futures
