We examine the extent to which there are significantly different types of Parental Involvement in student's high school experience, and what the relationship of these different types may be to long-term student outcomes, such as high school graduation, college going, and specifically for this study, STEM career outcomes. With the dataset the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002) which includes 11,727 parents of high school students in the United States, we examine how parents interact with students and schools using Latent Class Analysis (LCA). We identify three significantly different subgroups of parent involvement: Guiding (44.2%), Lenient (22.3%), and Advocate (33.5%). Parental context and demographic factors, such as gender and ethnicity, and school variables, such as private status and school size, are significantly associated with membership across subgroups, which in turn are related to students' education outcomes, such as college enrollment and selection of a STEM career versus other career outcomes.

Bu araştırmanın amacı çocuğu ilkokula devam eden ebeveynlerin çocuğa yönelik takındığı ebeveyn tutumlarının, sınıfa yansımaları nasıldır? sorusuna cevap aramaktır. Sınıf öğretmenlerinin, velilerinde görülen ebeveyn tutumlarının öğrencilerin sınıf içi davranışlarına yansımaları konusundaki görüşlerini derinlemesine incelemeyi amaçlayan bu araştırma, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden temel nitel araştırma olarak desenlemiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, Konya ili merkez ilçelerinde 2021-2022 eğitim-öğretim yılında özel ve devlet okulunda görev yapan 11 sınıf öğretmeninden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın katılımcılarının belirlenmesinde ölçüt örnekleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın katılımcıları belirlenirken sınıf öğretmenlerinin çalışmış oldukları okulların türü, hizmet yılı (en az on beş yıl ve üzeri olması tercih edilmiştir) ve bulundukları çevrenin sosyo-ekonomik yapıları bir çeşitlilik alanı olarak kabul edilerek seçilmesine dikkat edilmiştir. Çalışmada araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan sorular, iki uzman sınıf öğretmeni ve iki eğitim bilimi uzmanına gösterilmiştir. Araştırmacı tarafından yeniden düzenlenen yarı yapılandırılmış “Çocuğu İlkokula Devam Eden Ebeveynlerin Çocuğa Yönelik Takındığı Ebeveyn Tutumların, Çocuk ve Sınıf Öğretmenlerine Yansımaları Araştırmasına İlişkin Kullanılan Öğretmen Görüşme Formu” kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler tematik analiz yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular ışığında katılımcı sınıf öğretmenleri, demokratik ebeveyn tutumunda yetişen öğrencilerin olumlu davranışlar; otoriter, ilgisiz ve koruyucu tutum gösteren velilerin öğrencilerinin ise olumsuz ve istenmedik davranışlar sergilediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırma sonucuna göre; anne-babaların çocuk yetiştirmede takındığı tutumların çocuğun sınıf içi davranışlarına olumlu ve olumsuz yansımaları olduğu ifade edilmiştir.

Parental Engagement in Children’s Learning: Moving on from Mass Superstition

In this article, I build on Goodman's concept of mass superstition, which he applied to the schooling system. Goodman holds that we continue to believe in the value of this system, without clear evidence that it is working. I use this concept to apply the argument to the way the current system deals with parents. In spite of clear indications in the research that parental engagement with children's learning is one of the best means to support educational achievement, particularly for children at risk of failure in the current system, parents are still routinely held at a distance from the learning processes fostered by the school system. I argue for a change to the foundational beliefs of the system, so that schools and families will work in partnership as co-constructors of children's learning.
