Parental Conflict Resolution Styles and Children's Adjustment: Children's Appraisals and Emotion Regulation as Mediators

Abstract: Guided by the emotional security hypothesis and the cognitive-contextual framework, the authors investigated whether the associations between negative parental conflict resolution styles and children's internalizing and externalizing problems were mediated by children's appraisals of threat and self-blame and their emotion regulation. Participants were 192 Swiss 2-parent families with children aged 9-12 years (M age = 10.62 years, SD = 0.41 years). Structural equation modeling was used to test the empirical va… Show more

“…A possible explanation for these non-significant associations is the low variance of the scale, given that most early adolescents in our study did not blame themselves for marital conflict (see Table 1). This methodological argument is underlined by findings from another study with the same data set which did not find a relationship between self-blame and internalizing and externalizing problems of the early adolescents (Siffert and Schwarz 2011a).…”

“…To test the study hypotheses, a hierarchical multinomial logistic regression was conducted in Mplus, Version 6.11 (Muthén & Muthén, 1998-2011. A multinomial logistic regression was required because the resolution variable was nominal with three categories; compromise, win-loss, and standoff.…”

“…Evidence from efficacy trials of this brief prevention program is promising, with participants experiencing decreased interparental conflict, increased marital satisfaction, and increased child adjustment after four psychoeducational sessions relative to control groups (Cummings et al, 2008). By emphasizing strategies to reduce hostility and anger during interparental conflict while simultaneously promoting emotional support and positive resolution tactics, such prevention programs are likely to support adolescent adjustment by minimizing distressing features of interparental conflict (Cummings & Davies, 2002; Cummings et al, 2008; Siffert & Schwarz, 2011; Zhou & Buehler, 2017). …”
