Parental Perspectives on Influenza Vaccination among Children with Asthma

Abstract: Physician recommendations and parental education about influenza vaccine availability, effectiveness, and adverse effects are potentially important influences on influenza vaccination. Our findings suggest that media coverage of the risks of influenza was associated with a significant increase in vaccination rates.

“…Although physician recommendation is a key factor driving parental decisions about vaccination (8)(9)(10), mandated vaccination can be a very effective strategy for ensuring high vaccination rates regionally and decreasing disparities in vaccine uptake. For example, hepatitis B vaccination rates were similarly low when first recommended for adolescents, but mandates for vaccination of schoolage children were effective in increasing rates of vaccination and narrowing disparities in vaccine coverage (28).…”

“…Because physician endorsement of vaccination is one of the most important predictors of vaccine acceptance (8)(9)(10), research that provides information about physician recommendations for HPV vaccines may help to inform interventions to improve those recommendations and increase uptake among adolescents. Conceptual models predicting physicians' intentions and recommendations for HPV vaccination may be useful in guiding both research and interventions.…”

“…Other studies have shown that mothers have concerns about vaccination causing autism or other learning disabilities, [33] but it is striking that 31% of mothers in our sample were concerned about death of their children as a result of vaccination. Addressing these types of concerns for parents has the potential to improve vaccination rates as children are more likely to be vaccinated if their parents are less concerned about adverse events [2,11,[34][35][36][37].…”

“…Previous literature has indicated the importance of vaccine recommendation by a GP as being influential in determining whether vaccination is accepted. [8][9][10][11][12] The potential for a strong recommendation from a GP to influence uncertainty about the indication for the vaccination, issues of choice, and health beliefs is illustrated in the key themes that arose in the present study. Health beliefs surrounding the vaccination are important issues in influencing compliance.…”
