Parental Stress and Children Adjustment in Kinship Foster Families

Abstract: This work focuses on a multidimensional exploration of the stress experienced by kinship foster carers. This study is the first one conducted on Spanish sample, with 116 kinship foster families and foster children, between the ages of 4 and 11 years. In general, data indicate that the carer's parental stress scores are within the normative range. The existing heterogeneity among these families is also reported, highlighting a carers group with high stress levels. Parental stress correlated with children variab… Show more

“…parenting stress in adolescent mothers in foster care [ 14 ]. A study by Jiménez et al [ 15 ] is related to parental stress in kinship foster families, which, however, are only in part comparable to the situation of non-kinship foster families addressed in the current study. One of the few studies which are directly related to parental stress in foster parents is a study of Nadeem et al [ 16 ] with repeated assessments of foster children’s mental health problems and their foster parent’s parental stress.…”

“…Furthermore, the link between high levels of parental stress and negative parental behavior is well established in literature (Morgan, Robinson, & Aldridge, 2002;Östberg & Hagekull, 2013). Early onset and long duration of parental stress is of particular importance because it correlates with child behavior, and the responses to various sorts of stress disrupt the interaction between the parent and child (Jiménez, Mata, León, & Muñoz, 2013;Schor et al, 2003). Finding ways to maintain parent-child communication and closeness might protect parents and families from increased stress during this vulnerable time (Prinzie et al, 2012).…”
