Parental psychological control (PC) hinders the development of autonomy, identity formation, and the attainment of self-determination and individuation of adolescents. The aim of this study was to deepen the understanding of which conditions increase the risk of the use of maternal PC by simultaneously considering the contribution of adolescent temperament, maternal separation anxiety, and adolescents’ perception of interparental conflict. A correlational study involving a sample of 106 Chilean adolescent-mother dyads was done. Adolescents were, on average, 15.42 years old (SD = 1.09) and 77% male. Mothers were, on average, 45.46 years old (SD = 6.39). We administered self-report questionnaires to the adolescent measuring effortful control and frustration as temperamental dimensions, along with the perception of interparental conflict. Mothers reported on their separation anxiety. Both the adolescents and their mothers reported on the use of maternal PC. Adolescents reported higher levels of maternal PC than their mothers did. All predictors were associated with PC reports. Higher levels of maternal anxiety about adolescent distancing, inter-parental conflict, and adolescent frustration were associated with higher reported levels of PC. In contrast, higher levels of adolescent effortful control were associated with lower levels of maternal PC. Finally, when maternal separation anxiety and inter-parental conflict were high there was a higher use of maternal PC. The present findings inform on how adolescent’s self-regulatory skills could reduce the risk of being exposed to maternal PC. And highlight the importance of using a systemic and interactional conceptualization when trying to understand their use.

Parental socialization styles influence the psychosocial well-being of sons and daughters according to sociodemographic variables. The aim of the study was to examine the perception of the educational styles exercised by fathers and mothers in a sample of adolescents from the Araucanía region, Chile. Within the framework of a non-experimental and cross-sectional design, 806 adolescents answered a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Parental Socialization Styles in Adolescence Scale (ESPA29). The results showed that there are differences by sex and age in the perception of the parental practices exercised by both the father and the mother, results that would make it possible to orient or focus family life education programs.

Introducción. En la pandemia las practicas parentales como los procesos educativos presentan transformaciones, al articularse se promueve la salud mental de los estudiantes; de cara a promover la permanencia escolar de los estudiantes. Objetivos. Reconocer las practicas parentales favorecedoras de la salud mental en los hijos, identificando estrategias para promover la permanencia escolar. Metodología. Bajo un enfoque cualitativo se adoptó un método hermenéutico, priorizando, las subjetividades representadas en las voces de los padres y madres para develar los significados y sentidos otorgados a sus experiencias. Resultados. Preocupación de padres al cuestionarse por el tiempo de horas que sus hijos pasan frente a las pantallas, sin hacer deporte y sin socializar con sus iguales, lo que puede afectar su salud mental, a pesar de percibir que sus hijos están más seguros en casa; puntúan favorablemente el involucrarse en el proceso educativo de sus hijos, lo cual les permitió reconocer sus intereses, estilos para aprender; además se preguntan qué lugares visitan sus hijos en redes sociales y con qué personas interactúan en la web. Conclusiones. las prácticas parentales favorecedoras de la permanencia se destacaron establecer horarios de acompañamiento al desarrollo tareas, seguimiento a las plataformas, grupos de WhatsApp, conexiones a video llamadas, manejo de pausas activas en las actividades académicas y continua comunicación con los docentes. Además, los estilos de crianza y una comunicación más fluida con sus hijos, favorecen su salud mental, al sentirse reconocidos, apoyados y validados por sus padres; así como las interacciones familiares e institucionales. La red de apoyo con la familia extensa y el trabajo colaborativo posibilitó aprendizajes escolares y favoreció la permanencia escolar; se necesitó reorganizar los tiempos de las familias; los padres para equilibrar el acompañamiento a las actividades académicas y cumplir con las demandas laborales y los hijos para adaptarse a la entrega de actividades en unas fechas establecidas sin contar con un acompañamiento pedagógico permanente, para lo cual fue necesario fortalecer el autoaprendizaje; de manera indirecta fortalece su empoderamiento como estudiantes, otro de los factores importantes para su salud mental.
