Pareto-Optimal Aircraft Technology Study for Environmental Benefits with Multi-Objective Optimization

Abstract: The composition of an aircraft technology portfolio in response to environmental impact goals is of paramount importance for present and future aeronautics. Characteristics of the portfolio selection problem are ideally addressed via multi-objective genetic algorithm optimization. Methodological and practical considerations of this approach are examined while generating meaningful insight specific to a set of aircraft technologies expected to mature over the coming decade. Results allow for a detailed characte… Show more

“…58 This method uses a posteriori articulation of preferences, where the Multi-Objective Decision Making (MODM) process is run to obtain Pareto-optimal solutions. A multi-objective genetic algorithm is used by Jimenez et al 59 to generate a set of Pareto-optimal technology combinations and the results show promising technologies to reach aircraft environmental goals in a decade.…”

“…Enabling a large number of scenarios to be computed in a short period of time, this statistically based classification and selection of representative-in-class vehicles can therefore be especially useful for multi-objective optimization analysis of aircraft technologies for minimizing environmental impact (Afonso et al, 2017;Jimenez and Mavris, 2017), aircraft route optimization for minimizing aircraft noise and emissions (Li et al, 2015), and economicenvironmental tradeoffs analysis (Rosskopf et al, 2014).…”

“…Most recently, Jimenez H and Mavris D. [9] developed a study on the application of multiobjective optimization to aircraft design for environmental benefits. The study aims to identify the Pareto-optimal solutions for aircraft design considering multiple objectives such as fuel consumption, noise, and emissions.…”
