Parietal Cell Vagotomy in Dogs

Abstract: No change was observed in fasting Heidenhain pouch (HP) acid secretion and fasting serum gastrin concentration following parietal cell vagotomy (PCV) in six dogs whereas significant increase in food-stimulated pouch secretion and serum gastrin concentration was observed. The increase in pouch secretion after PCV took place mainly in the first 2 h after meal. The maximum serum gastrin concentration was reached at 15 min after feeding before as well as after PCV. Maximum in HP secretion was reached later, at 120… Show more

“…In the experiments of Bauer and co-workers serum gastrin concentration did not reach basal levels at 5 hours following feeding. This is in contrast to our experience [3]. The authors suggest gastric stasis as a possible explanation referring to their previous emptying studies.…”

“…According to our findings [7] no significant delay in gastric emptying rate occurs after SPV without a drainage procedure, and we are therefore more inclined to accept the rise in intragastric pH as the cause. The difference between Bauer's and our results may possibly be explained by a more extensive antral denervation performed by the German group [3].…”

“…The rise in 24-hr HP acid secretion has been confirmed. However, this parameter reflects a combination of secretion during both fasting and feeding, The main increase in HP output after PCV occurs, in fact, during feeding while the fasting pouch secretion is minimal [13]. This is in agreement with studies on variations in serum gastrin concentration that showed an insignificant rise during fasting but a highly significant rise after food intake [14].…”
