Park and Museum Interpretation: Helping Visitors Find Meaning

Abstract: Interpretation is defined as an activity that "facilitates an intellectual and emotional connection between the interests of the visitor and the meanings of the resource." The concept of helping visitors connect to meanings is a constant theme in the development of philosophies and practices in interpretation over the last century. Parks and museums have long shared in the effort to put this concept into practice. This article documents this history and the implications for contemporary interpretation.

“…Other how-to manuals on technique exist (e.g., Roth, 1998;Beck & Cable, 2002;Bridal, 2004), offering strategies and guidelines for practice that are based on vetted interpretive philosophy and learning theory. The small number of research studies that have been conducted suggest that making an emotional connection with the audience and linking interpretation with visitors' previous experiences and prior knowledge are hallmarks of effective interpretation (Gross & Zimmerman, 2002;Ballantyne, 2003;Benton, 2008).…”

According to Carter (2001:3), interpretation is "helping people appreciate something that you feel is special", while other definitions of interpretation include the ability to "excite, delight, and awaken the senses" (Moscardo et al, 2007:3).…”
