Parkinson’s Disease Management via Wearable Sensors: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Wearable technology has played an essential role in the Mobile Health (mHealth) sector for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of numerous diseases and disorders. One such neuro-degenerative disorder is Parkinson's Disease (PD). It is categorized by motor symptoms that affect a patient's motor skills and non-motor symptoms that affect the general health of a PD patient. The quality of life of a patient with PD is highly compromised. To date, there is no cure for the disease, but early intervention and ass… Show more

“…Cognitive assessment assists individuals who cannot efficiently carry out their routine activities to promote sustainability and support independent living. Nowadays, intelligent systems based AI technologies are widely used in smart cognitive health and medical applications for health monitoring of individuals with diseases to avoid possible risks [ 2 ]. These AI based systems do not complain fatigue; thus, they can process large quantities of data at very high speed outperforming humans accuracy in the same job [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…It aids in the maintenance of a heart’s pumping ability when it is unable to perform correctly on its own. Implantable Nerve Electrodes (INEs): These are essential treatments for neurological diseases, such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and others, particularly in the absence of specific medications [ 93 ]. INEs can investigate and regulate the nervous system by recording electrical nerve impulses or stimulating nerve tissue.…”

“…With the progress of technology, each day more Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solutions are allowing an automated recognition of many diseases [ 8 , 9 , 10 ], mainly a better understanding of PD [ 11 ], allowing the early diagnostics of the disease. Each year, numerous studies are published aiming to speed up the diagnosis [ 12 ] and management [ 13 ] of PD in order to allow a better patient quality of life. The motor symptoms characteristic of the disease affect simple daily activities performed by patients, such as typing on a computer’s keyboard [ 14 , 15 ].…”
