Parkinsonism induced by solvent abuse

Abstract: We report the first description of a patient with parkinsonism induced by solvent abuse. Our patient developed parkinsonism acutely, following heavy abuse of lacquer thinner. Her clinical deficits were indistinguishable from idiopathic parkinsonism (Parkinson's disease) and she responded to levodopa. Parkinsonism has persisted for more than 3 months. Brain computed tomography was normal. Positron emission tomographic studies showed normal fluorodopa uptake and reduced raclopride binding, indicating an unusual … Show more

“…In fact, clinical studies have demonstrated that parkinsonism is found in patients with long-term occupational exposure to solvents, including toluene, xylene, methyl-ethylketone, methanol, n-hexane and carbon disulfide [8, 9]. We could not identify the causal constitution of the solvents in the present cases, because both patients had been exposed to several different solvents for more than 20 years.…”

“…In 2004, the lifetime prevalence of inhalant use among 8 th graders (17.3%) nationally exceeded the prevalences for marijuana (16.3%), amphetamines (7.5%), hallucinogens (3.5%), cocaine (3.4%), and heroin (1.6%) . Recurrent inhalant use is associated with serious health problems including cerebellar ataxia, Parkinsonism, encephalopathy, trigeminal neuropathy, hepatorenal syndrome, hepatotoxicity, and "sudden sniffing death" (Brett, 1997;Meadows and Verghese, 1996;Utti et al, 1994).…”

“…Over the past 100 years, there have been a number of reports of acute parkinsonism occurring in individuals exposed to large amounts of solvents, including methanol [12], n-hexane [13] and hydrocarbon solvent mixtures [14][15][16]. However, the syndromes caused by these intoxications were almost always distinct from PD in both their clinical phenomenology and neuropathology.…”
