Parotid Saliva Test in the Diagnosis of Chronic Pancreatitis

Abstract: The parotid saliva test was evaluated in 31 patients with chronic pancreatitis proven by the secretin-pancreozymin test and failed to detect pancreatic insufficiency in the majority of the cases. According to this result the test cannot be recommended as a screening test for chronic pancreatitis.

“…Other known applications in human medicine include genetic analysis ( 110 ) and the determination of sex hormones, such as testosterone ( 111 ) and progesterone ( 112 ) which have not yet been used in feline medicine. There are also studies on the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis ( 113 ), Sjögren's syndrome ( 114 ), or Prader-Willi syndrome ( 115 ) but also tumor diseases [such as breast cancer ( 116 )], pancreatitis ( 117 , 118 ), diabetes mellitus ( 119 , 120 ), or sepsis ( 121 123 ). Due to the large number of studies in human medicine, only examples can be given here.…”

“…Indirect tests are a practical alternative for diagnosing EPI and their diagnostic value increases along with the severity of pancreatic dysfunction (49). In dogs, the value of pancreatic function tests has relied mostly on their ability to distinguish whether the clinical maldigestion signs are due to exocrine pancreatic dysfunction or to a small intestinal disease (128 (49).…”

“…In dogs, the value of pancreatic function tests has relied mostly on their ability to distinguish whether the clinical maldigestion signs are due to exocrine pancreatic dysfunction or to a small intestinal disease (128 (49). In dogs with an experimentally induced partial EPI, the serum PABA levels indicated a moderate dysfunction as the results were higher than in severe EPI but lower than in controls (95).…”
