Parsing a plethora of pollen: the role of pollen size and shape in the evolution of Boraginaceae

Abstract: Pollen, the microgametophyte of seed plants, has an important role in plant reproduction and, therefore, evolution. Pollen is variable in, for example, size, shape, aperture number; these features are particularly diverse in some plant taxa and can be diagnostic. In one family, Boraginaceae, the range of pollen diversity suggests the potential utility of this family as a model for integrative studies of pollen development, evolution and molecular biology. In the present study, a comprehensive survey of the div… Show more

“…According to Fan et al [36] and Song et al [12], the exine ornamentation of C. oleifera was mostly perforate and occasionally verrucate or microreticulate. The trait of the exine sculpture is commonly described by the lumina diameter (D), lumina muri width (W), and the ratio of lumina diameter to the muri width (D/W) [9,37,38]. In our report, no.…”

“… Boraginaceae are a palynologically heterogeneous family ( Erdtman 1969 ; Nowicke and Miller 1990 ), and pollen grains also could be useful for lower taxonomic levels, such as genera ( Bigazzi et al 2006 ; Liu et al 2010 ; Sutorý 2013 ; Noroozi et al 2021 ). The subtribe Eritrichiinae is one of the major clades of tribe Rochelieae with 6 genera and over 200 species ( Chacón et al 2016 ), but palynological studies of this subtribe are insufficient.…”
