Part 2 of the 11+ as an effective home-based exercise programme in elite academy football (soccer) players: a one-club matched-paired randomised controlled trial

Abstract: Although the 11+ is known to reduce injuries and improve performance in adolescent footballers, its duration presents a notable barrier to implementation. Hence, this study investigated injury and performance outcomes when 65 elite male academy footballers either performed Part 2 3x / week at training (TG) or at home (HG). Time to stabilisation (TTS), eccentric hamstring strength (EH-S) and countermovement jump height (CMJ-H) were collected four times during the 2019 football season.Linear mixed-models were us… Show more

“…Flexible modes of delivery may assist with increasing player adherence with part 2 of the 11 + . For example, re-scheduling Part 2 of the 11 + to the end of a training session 42 and completing it as a home exercise program 43 has been shown to maintain its effectiveness and increase adherence. In our survey 31.6% of coaches and between 12-17% of other stakeholders added part 2 of the 11 + to the end of a training session.…”

“… 17 While the study participants knew about the 11+, there was a clear lack of uptake towards the part 2 strength exercises, consistent with published data. 23 24 …”

“…The literature provides examples where strengthening exercises have been successfully implanted into training sessions to improve adherence. 23 There is also evidence that supports moving the strength exercises to the end of a football session with this having been shown to both improve adherence and to improve the efficacy of the programme. 24 As a result, there is a need to consider how to implement strength-based training in future programmes.…”

“…reduce the risk of lower extremity injuries [21]. Studies by Veith et al (2021) and Lopes et al (2020) would precisely support this assumption, where they found no improvement in ankle stability, proprioception, and ankle evertors time latency following performing part two and the whole programme, respectively [17,22,23]. Hence, rescheduling the 11+ has been taken into account and appears to mitigate severe injuries and increase compliance [14].…”

“…The most frequent reasons trainers gave for the modifications were adding variation, progression, challenge, and individualization [ 14 , 16 ]. Additionally, Veith et al suggested that part two of the FIFA11+ can be used outside of the training sessions since the trainers do not want to invest in it [ 17 ].…”
