Part Family and Operations Group Formation for RMS Using Bond Energy Algorithm

Abstract: Abstract-In the present global scenario companies are forced to compete in product varieties and speed to market as well as in price. Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMSs) have been envisaged as a manufacturing paradigms to face these challenges. The foundation of RMS lies on the premise of group technology. The present work highlights the peculiarities of RMS vis a vis CMS, another group technology based manufacturing paradigm. It attempts to evolve a methodology for RMS cell formation; composition of p… Show more

“…The algorithm uses dendrograms to identify similarities in parts which are then used to merge parts into families and gradually build them into a single larger family until it is no longer feasible to merge them any further. However, several (Ghosh and Dan, 2010); (Ashraf and Hasan, 2015); (Wang et al, 2016); (Khanna and Kumar, 2017) and (Sibanda et al, 2019). When the part family has been identified, correct function chosen and the correct machine configuration set for the part family production, then the machine is deemed ready for execution.…”

“…(2017a, b, c, d) have proposed the part family formation using bond energy method and subsequently used the PPFD score method. Khanna and Kumar (2017) have also used BEA for RMS part family formation through the part operation incidence matrix. Xia et al .…”

“…The development of group technology enabled the grouping of products into families and formation of machines into cells. Cell formation is a core activity in group technology-based Manufacturing systems that leads to the creation of part families (Khanna and Kumar, 2017). There are several methods used to develop part families or grouping of machines into cells.…”
