Partial Elimination of Viruses from Traditional Potato Cultivar ‘Brinjak’ by Chemotherapy and Its Impact on Physiology and Yield Components

Abstract: Viruses are responsible for more than 50% of annual potato tuber yield losses and cause great economic damage. The traditional Croatian potato cultivar ‘Brinjak’ is important for local growers because of its economically profitable production and as a gene pool for future breeding programs. However, the full genetic potential of the cultivar cannot be exploited due to virus infection. In this study, we attempted to eliminate potato virus M (PVM) and potato virus S (PVS) from potato cultivar ‘Brinjak’ and to ev… Show more

“…In recent years, there have been few reports on the activity of triazole compounds against plant viruses. Although the commercially available antiviral agent ribavirin is also a triazole compound [133], it seems that triazole compounds have not received much attention in the discovery of plant virus. Some reported triazole compounds have shown good antiviral activity, which may increase the use of triazole compounds in plant viruses.…”

“…Numerous chemicals have been tested for antiviral activity, but few were effective. The most substance is the synthetic analogue of guanosine, ribavirin (1-beta-Dribofuranosyl-1-H-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide) added to the media in the range of 30-50 mg/l was affective against Potato virus X (PVX), Potato Virus Y (PVY), Potato Virus S (PVS) and Potato Virus M (PVM) in potato [13,14], Carnation Mottle Virus (CarMV) in carnation [15], Onion Yellow Dwarf Virus (OYDV) in onion [16], Satsuma Dwarf Virus (SDV) in citrus [17] and Chrysanthemum Virus-B (CVB) in chrysanthemum [18]. Ribavirin is a member of the nucleoside anti metabolite compound that interferes with duplication of viral genetic material.…”
