Partial thickness cornea tissue from small incision lenticule extraction

Abstract: Objective:The aim of the present study was to observe the feasibility and effect of cornea slice acquired from femtosecond laser surgery, small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) as patch graft for the prevention of drainage tube exposure and to compare with the sclera. Methods:The research is a prospective comparative randomized study. Patients who received Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation surgery from August 2015 to January 2017 at the Xiamen Eye Center were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A (cornea… Show more

“…The most commonly used materials are preserved sclera, pericardium, dura mater, amniotic membrane, and donor cornea. 4 , 8 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 Many materials are expensive, difficult to obtain, or may not provide a cosmetically acceptable appearance. Amniotic membranes used in recent years reduce scleral melting and accelerate epithelialization but provide weak tectonic support in deep tissue loss.…”

“…[64,65] However, this additional processing might not be necessary because mid-to-long term follow-up have not reported any adverse immunological events with unmodified lenticules in recipients. [66][67][68][69] Certainly, immune cells have been detected in fresh lenticules compared to few or none in preserved specimens. [70] We confirmed this notion by identifying a population of CD45 + leukocytes within lenticules, further specifying them as CD14 + macrophages (Figure 5a, first-third columns).…”

“…Since 2015, we have experimented and used 3 layers of lamellar corneal tissue acquired from SMILE surgery as patch grafts in drainage implant surgery. [ 14 ] The diameter of the lamellar corneal tissue is approximately 7 mm, and each layer is 100- to 150-μm thick. Our research provided that 3 layers of corneal graft could effectively prevent drainage tube exposure.…”
