Participation and Performance in the Oldest Ultramarathon–Comrades Marathon 1921–2019

Abstract: Participation and performance trends have been analyzed for different ultramarathons for limited time periods. This study examined trends in participation and performance in the oldest ultramarathon in the world, the ‘Comrades Marathon’ (South Africa), during a century (1921−2019). Data from www.ultra-marathon.org on 100 000 unique finishers were analysed using different general linear models. Women represented 4.2% of the total sample (n=4152), and the first women ran this race in 1978. Before the year 1965, … Show more

“…A further finding was that mostly the age group of 30-59 years increased the number of participants. A similar development occurred in the "Comrades Marathon" with an increase in finishers that arises from a higher number of male participants in the age group 30-60 years [13,23]. Additionally, a new age group appeared in 2010 in our study, with participants over 80 years beginning to take part more frequently in these events.…”

“…This means that the longer the competition's running distance, the earlier the performance balance between men and women [39]. This trend of a smaller performance gap between men and women in the older than in the younger age groups could also be demonstrated in big data samplings of 50-km ultra-marathons worldwide [40], in single races like "The Comrades Marathon" [13,41], or in the "New York City Marathon" [42]. These findings of the performance gap decline in older age groups in ultra-marathons have already been demonstrated in other sports, such as master swimmers, who no longer have a performance gap in the age group 80-89 years [30].…”

“…Considering all women and men, performance was observed to be stable over the years, but when considered by decades, both women and men were faster in the last two decades compared with the first two decades of the race. There was an improvement in performance for the fastest runners in the Comrades Marathon (South Africa) during the century 1921–2019; whereas overall women and men maintained a stable running speed, an improvement in performance for the annual top five women and men was found [ 26 ]. Both the Comrades Marathon and the Spartathlon have strict participant selection criteria and strict cut-off times during the race.…”
