Participation in farmers' organization and production efficiency: empirical evidence from smallholder farmers in Bangladesh

Abstract: PurposeFarmer organizations (FOs) can elevate many of the production- and marketing-related challenges by ensuring access to technology, farming information and loan for inputs and mechanization. This study assesses the major factors that affect the participation in FOs by the smallholder rice farmers in Bangladesh and evaluates the impacts of the participation on rice yield and production efficiency.Design/methodology/approachThe present study used primary data collected from 1,000 smallholder rice farmers in… Show more

“…Farmers who are participating in group demonstration have been found to more efficient in agricultural production. This has been shown by Bairagi and Mottaleb (2021) who conducted a study on "Participation in farmers' organization and production efficiency: empirical evidence from smallholder farmers in Bangladesh." They found out that farmers who participated in an organization had higher rice yield (11% more) and were technically more efficient (1.4% points higher) compared to farmers who did not participate.…”

“…However, β𝑖 is not directly comparable across studies for at least two reasons. First, studies estimate yields for a variety of farm products such as apple (Ma & Abdulai 2016), potato (Ahado et al 2021), maize (Olagunju et al 2021), rice (Bairagi & Mottaleb 2021), banana (Ma et al 2022a), coffee (Ortega et al 2019), dairy (Chagwiza et al 2016), and goat (Neupane et al 2022). Accordingly, different units (e.g., tons, kilograms, and litres) are employed to measure yields.…”

“…To date, the literature in this field reports mixed findings. Most studies show that cooperative membership increases yield (Ahado et al 2021;Bairagi & Mottaleb 2021;Chagwiza et al 2016;Ingutia & Sumelius 2022). In contrast, some find that cooperative membership has little (Hun et al 2018;Kashiwagi 2020;Mwaura 2014;Shumeta & D'Haese 2016) or even a negative impact on yield (Fischer & Qaim 2012;Neupane et al 2022).…”

“…The common expectations of members from cooperatives are to get shared access to inputs, enhanced market power and effective bargaining capacity (Ruben and Heras, 2012). Farmer organizations can address the production and marketing challenges faced by farmers, through access to technology, farming information and loan for input and mechanization (Bairagi and Mottaleb, 2021).…”
