Participatory Action Research, Social Networks, and Gender Influence Soil Fertility Management in Tanzania

Abstract: Transformation of knowledge systems and fostering learning among smallholder farmers such as through participatory action research (PAR) is key to agricultural growth in rural sub-Saharan Africa. We investigate how PAR influences uptake/use of integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) while accounting for gendered, bonding and bridging social capital. Stratified by engagement in a mother-baby PAR and by resource endowments, 607 smallholder farmers were sampled from northern Tanzania. Binary logistic and mult… Show more

“…The low levels of carbon in cultivated fields relative to that of natural vegetation can be attributed to continuous disturbance of soil through tillage. The low adoption of soil and water conservation strategies and organic resource flows from crop fields to homefields by 76% of households, for livestock fodder, (Mponela et al, 2022) also contributes to reduced soil organic carbon. The Ferritic nature of the soil might have enhanced fixing of soil P resulting in its deficiency.…”

“…However, equitable participation must be continuously improved in order to strengthen soil resource management from an ecosystemic perspective (FAO, 1999;Altieri, 2002;Ezeaku and Davidson, 2008;Sardá et al, 2013;Brody, 2003;Oliveira and Meyfroidt, 2021). In line with (Snapp et al, 2018;Mponela et al, 2023;Mathys et al, 2023), women's participation is essential for sustainable land use and gender equity indicators must be designed focused on productivity and the decision-making process in households (Gutierrez-Montes et al, 2020).…”

“…To improve adaptive capacities, agricultural extension has been pivotal in enhancing the adoption of SI and good agronomic practices but with reduction in government extension services, strategies to educate farmers through their participation in action research and demonstrations in farmers settings have become quintessential research and extension approach. There is growing evidence that participatory action research (PAR) unlocks adoption of improved agricultural technologies, crop productivity and net returns [ [1] , [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] ]. While there are several studies on the adoption and productivity effects of participation, fewer studies have explored the linkage between participation in PAR, the adoption of technologies and food security outcomes [ 6 ].…”

“…Over the past 6 decades, innovations have been availed and efforts are ongoing to increase adoption [ [19] , [20] , [21] , [22] ]. Studies show that engagement in participatory action research enhances adoption of technologies [ 5 ], is a pathway towards climate change adaptation [ 11 ] and induces diversity in diets [ 22 ] and most important for achievement of children's minimum dietary requirements [ 23 ]. In addition to availing technologies, participatory action research provides nutritional education which has also been found to improve nutrition outcomes [ 24 ] though evidence in the past decade has been scanty.…”
